The Better Half

I officially started the draft of my second book this morning! However, this one's gonna take a little longer to write - I have 43 more years to work on it:

Chapter 1 – The Better Half

A Valentine’s Day vision – from my journal, 2-14-13:
As I layed in bed after the alarm went off this morning, asking the Holy Spirit to fill me and do this healthy eating thing in me because I can’t, I thought about how this will allow me to live the second half of my life healthy and free from food addiction. I thought about how God’s giving me back the years that were stolen from me and how I’m going to live long and produce “fruit, fruit, lots of fruit” (a word spoken over me by a pastor) into my old age… and then a thought came to me: that when I’m 100, I’ll write another book about the second fifty years of my life and I’ll call it “The Better Half”. And that book will be all about living in victory! This is the vision I prayed for God to give me! This is what I’m building – “The Better Half”.

And it won’t begin with depression and pain. It won’t be hard to write like “Out of the Pit” was.

It’ll be filled with miracles and the joy of how God was able to use me.

When I was in high school in the late 1970’s, I was in a small vocal ensemble called The Sweet Sixteen which was made up of eight girls and eight guys. Within this group, the guys were known as The Great Eight and the girls were The Better Half and each performed their own numbers separately in addition to the combined group. The music we did was of a greater difficulty than that of the larger choir - everything had to be memorized and we even did simple choreography while we sang. Being part of that group was beyond anything I’d dreamt of for myself – a nerdy, socially-awkward introvert who never felt like she fit in. To me, it represented being esteemed by my peers, respected and maybe even a little popular. It meant realizing the potential that had been locked away inside of me that no one to that point had been able to recognize or appreciate. But now it was able to come out and be used to create something beautiful.

This is what the second half of my life represents in the kingdom of God. I wrote the draft of “Out of the Pit” when I was 50 years old. I cried and relived those years of pain while getting it all out there with the hope that it would help just one person who was struggling with depression and looking for a ray of light. It was difficult but I knew I HAD to do it and that the Holy Spirit was giving me the words that just poured out with clarity and power. It was heavy, deep and brutally honest but I’ve always figured:  What’s the point of saying anything unless it’s honest and can have a real impact?

So now I believe that God has told me that I’m going to live to be 100 (at least). And these second 50 years of my life have a purpose that goes beyond getting free from pain, pointless suffering and despair. This half of my life is all about how I’m getting in line with my Father’s plans, finding my role in them, and how He’s able to use me to create something beautiful.

This is The Better Half.

Jesus is Calling

Truly, truly I say to you, he who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is a shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he puts forth all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. A stranger they simply will not follow but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.
                                                                   John 10: 1-5

I read this on Saturday morning and instantly had a little scene play out in my mind. Jesus was at the gate calling, "Come now, little sheep! It's time to go" in that sweet sort of voice you use to talk to a small child. I'd been out in the field running around and gleefully came trotting up to Him exclaiming, "Here I am! I'm Your little sheep!" It was a joyful meeting: I sensed His pleasure at my coming when He called. He was glad to see me and I was excited to be with Him. He was leading me and protecting me and wanted me and I wanted to follow His voice with a childlike trust. I knew He had a serious responsibility but it was ok with Him for me to be my playful little sheep self. And while it flashed across my mind's screen, I knew it wasn't just an allegorical vision, but was actually happening in the spiritual realm while I sat in my prayer chair in my bedroom.

A couple of thoughts about this:

   - First, I've long prayed for a face to face encounter with Jesus. He answered my prayer in a
very sweet, loving way that shows me how He sees me.

   - second, I know His voice! This makes me very excited.

   - and third, He said, "It's time to go" - where's He taking me? My initial sense is that He's gathering His Body to wrap things up. More than ever, we need to stay close to the Word and in tune with His Voice.

Keep your lamps burning and stay awake!
Jesus is calling.

Dr. Caroline Leaf - "Overcoming Depression"

I discovered Dr. Caroline Leaf  and her work after God woke me up from depression. I think it was the Holy Spirit's way of confirming to me what had taken place in my mind and body. I can't describe to you how excited I was when I began hearing and reading the work of a scientist who was saying all of the things that I'd been learning!

She's a Christian neuroscientist from South Africa, now based out of Dallas, TX. She talks a lot about the mind-body connection and how the Bible and science don't contradict each other but that science confirms the Bible. You can find lots of YouTube videos of her teaching and she also has a website and tv show.

In this particular video, she addresses very plainly the common misconceptions about depression and psychotropic drugs (these include antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications). I highly recommend that you watch it all the way through! You won't hear most of this anywhere else.

The really good parts start after the intro so keep watching.

In a Nutshell

If you haven't read "Out of the Pit", this is it in a nutshell: God freed me from 25 years of major clinical depression by the power of His Word. I was told it was genetic, I'd never work again and I needed to learn to "live" with it. None of that turned out to be true.

The medical community doesn't know everything and mental illness doesn't have to be a life sentence! We think we're so smart but we actually know very little about the brain. Through submitting to the Holy Spirit, He taught me that our thoughts create physical changes in our brains (and the rest of our bodies too) and that when we choose to think His thoughts, our brains are restored to how He originally intended them to be. This is the renewing of the mind that the Bible talks about in Romans 12:2.

He freed me and He can free anyone else. I'm not special, I just didn't give up.

If you want to hear all about how I got into the pit, what I went through there and then how God woke me up and walked me through the process of getting free, it's all in the book - all of the gorey details. I didn't gloss over the ugly parts so that you'd know I understand your pain and the depth of it. And I pray that you'll make the connection that you too can climb out of the pit.

It IS possible. I'm proof. Cry out to God with everything in you and don't give up.

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,"
           declares the LORD.
"For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts."
                                                                              Isaiah 55:8-9

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind,
so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable
         and perfect.
                                                                              Romans 12:2

Amen, come Holy Spirit

Getting Alone With God

I've been reading Luke and, for the past couple of days, thinking about Jesus' 40 days in the wilderness by Himself. I couldn't make it through a 3-day fast with my sister and I don't like being by myself at home every day (I live alone). But what new level might I reach and what might I be able to hear because of disconnecting myself from the daily demands of my body and the cares of life?

It's kind of what I do on Saturday mornings. Even Sunday mornings start with getting out of the house to go to church. But Saturday mornings are for playing a few songs on my guitar, leisurely writing in my journal, thoughtfully reading my next Bible chapter, and listening. I listen for that one golden nugget from Him that hits me deep in my heart and gives me direction for my next step of faith; the one Word from Him that's full of life and truth and is what I need to survive. It always comes if I listen with an open heart.

And then I eat some breakfast (sometimes at noon) and set about my chores, carrying with me what I gained in that secret place.

And Jesus answered him, "It is written, man shall not live on bread alone."
                                                                                                                                       Luke 4:4
